An Environmental Application process for the proposed development of a poultry facility for egg production on Suainabahl Farm 489 is underway. The property is owned by the Proponent in the Sakhisizwe Local Municipality, Chris Hani District, Eastern Cape Province. The proposed preferred poultry facility will consist of four poultry houses and a packhouse/office, incinerator, septic tank, zinc reservoir, electricity line, water pipeline, fencing and internal roads. An alternative site has been identified approximately 800m to the southeast of the preferred site adjacent to the R56 and closer to the main farm residence and dwellings (Fig.5). The alternative site is smaller in available land size which will result in the chicken house design to be compacted to accommodate the desired size of the facility by the Proponent, due to physical site constraints including a large erosion gully to the south and the R56 road to the north. The screening tool report reveals that the alternative site would be located within a ESA 1 and 2 areas and would require more stringent biosecurity measures due to the proximity of the adjacent road and farm house dwellings/traffic movements. The preferred site has been selected due to the lower terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity sensitivity and proximity to a water source i.e. the Tsomo River. The proposed alternative site for the poultry facility will consist of four poultry houses and a packhouse/office, incinerator, septic tank, electricity line, water pipeline, fencing and internal roads
Location: The site is located on Suinbahl Farm 489 near Khowa, Sakhisizwe Local Municipality, Chris Hani District, Eastern Cape.
